Golden Shears

WBS is thrilled to be once again supporting the world-renowned Golden Shears competition, being held in Masterton from Thursday 2nd March to Saturday 4th March 2023.

We are delighted to support this showcase of talent, skill, power and precision of Shearing, Wool Handling and Pressing which has placed Masterton and the Wairarapa region firmly on the world stage. From our agricultural beginnings, shearing has progressed from being a physically demanding and arduous farm task to being recognised as an elite sporting pursuit with an outcome that contributes to the economic well-being of New Zealand.

Many ideas came from humble foundations, and this competition was no exception. In 1958 a group of Wairarapa Young Farmers Club members suggested a shearing competition at the local A&P Show, with invitations to competitors locally and around the country to compete. It quickly became apparent from the level of interest, participation and sporting prowess there was an untapped opportunity to showcase shearing talent. By 1961, the “Golden Shears” was so titled, and now signifies the pinnacle of International Shearing and Wool handling standards. The prestigious event is live broadcasted and attracts competitors and audiences from all over the world. The Golden Shears logo has become an internationally recognised trademark that symbolises both quality and excellence in the skilful art of shearing and wool handling.

The Golden Shears is a three-day spectacle of talent, strength and non-stop entertainment. With many different classes of competition being fought out, WBS will be proudly sponsoring the Junior Wool Handling event, with heats being held on Thursday 2 March at 8:30am, followed by the semi-final on Saturday at 7:45am and final at 12:40pm.

Tickets are available and on sale now via Eventfinda. This is truly an event for the whole family to get caught up in the excitement and awe of watching live, some of the most skilful shearers and wool handlers in the world in action. For more information on the Golden Shears, visit their website.
